TAKING TIME WITH THE TOUAREG

I have been in the wonderful North Africa for a few days now . I started my journey  in Marrakech and from there I travelled on to Erg Chegaga, to experience Morocco in a totally different way.

The Erg Chegaga desert is overwhelming. I could get lost forever in these sand hills.. wherever I look, there is space. An endless space.

I can’t help but smile when enjoying this view. It makes me realise how I decided to embrace the unknown more. Wanting someone is the first step, really doing it is something else. I will spend another night in a tent in the middle of the desert. I won’t be all by myself, though, I let myself be immersed in the world of the Tuareg people and stay with them in their temporary tent camp. The Tuareg are nomadic and therefore move from one place to another.

Everything I experience here feels like seizing the ultimate adventure. Not in the way I am used to, with my foot on the brake, but by slowing down. By simply being in the moment. In the company of other people. Or just alone. I feel challenged  to be very consciously focused on activities or to just sit in silence.Although, silence... Apart from the rustling of the wind, you can also hear other sounds here. When I stepped out of my tent this afternoon - after some time for myself - I heard music that I had never heard before. I curiously followed the sound and caught the enthusiastic glance of the guide. He told me that this music is also called 'desert blues': the sound of the Sahara.

Because the Tuareg live in the heart of the Sahara and travel around as nomads - they cannot carry instruments that are too heavy. The base of the music is rhythmic hand clapping and singing.

What an amazing experience.. The hot air around us cooled down the later it got, and the starry sky, softly announced the beginning of the night. The music echoed in my head and my body could not help but dance. I let myself be carried away by the music and danced with my bare feet in the sand.

I am discovering. By just floating along to the rhythm. Taking the moments in completely. Forgetting about – and embracing - the time. Doing what feels right. With my bare feet in the sand. Day by day.
