Staycation: 5x sustainable hotels in the Netherlands

Due to the security risks and travel restrictions, we suddenly seem much more dependent our home country as our holiday destination. For our Dutchies that means staying in the Netherlands, and that’s not that bad (contrary to popular belief)! The Netherlands has gorgeous nature, trendy cities and stylish hotels to offer. And now that the environment is becoming increasingly important when choosing how to fill in your holiday, these sustainable hotels are a must-visit during your vacation/staycation in the Netherlands!

Conscious Hotels, Amsterdam
The Conscious Hotels has four locations in Amsterdam: The Tire Station, Westerpark, Vondelpark and Museum Square. Every hotel is different, but they have one thing in common: they’re all sustainable. For example, one hotel has solar panels on the roof and the other has a green sedum roof. The Conscious Hotel in Westerpark is 100% electric. All of the hotels use sustainable materials. The wood comes from well-managed forests, the floors and beds are ‘cradle to cradle’ (everything is recyclable) and the bedding is made from organic cotton. In addition, the kitchen shows their sustainability. All food is organic and they collaborate with local suppliers as much as possible. The Conscious Hotels show sustainability at its best in the very city centre of the Dutch capital!

Townhouse Designhotel, Maastricht
This eco-hotel in the Dutch province of Limburg sees environmental protection as one of their main goals. In addition to trying to minimize and carefully separate waste, the Townhouse Designhotel also uses LED lighting, they safe water and use environmentally friendly printing. Besides that, the hotel only uses second-hand tableware from brands in the area and their old work uniforms go to charity. They also support the regional economy by using products from local suppliers. At the Townhouse Hotel you’ll find the cosiness of Limburg in a modern and sustainable way!

Suitehotel Pincoffs, Rotterdam
This small hotel with 8 different suites can be found at the ‘Kop van Zuid’ in Rotterdam. When creating the hotel, Hotel Pincoffs made choices in which comfort and care for the environment went hand in hand. They make conscious choices and try to do as little damage to the earth as possible in everything they do. For example, in the rooms you’ll find toilet paper from ‘The Good Roll’, which is a company that makes toilet paper 100% tree-friendly and uses half of their profit to build sanitation in developing countries. The hotel also shows sustainability in the kitchen: the hotel created, in collaboration with the municipality of Rotterdam, a vegetable and fruit garden where they get ingredients for the kitchen and bar. Besides that, the hotel planted 2500 trees in the Pincoffs forest in Panama as compensation!

Forest hotel Overberg, Utrechtse Heuvelrug
This hotel was built in 2009 and was the only sustainable 4-star hotel in the Netherlands at that time. It’s located in the middle of a forest and sustainability is shown throughout the hotel. For example, the conference rooms in the hotel have an eco-roof made of moss/sedum and the ceiling in those rooms is made of recycled paper. The floor in the hotel’s kitchen is made from recycled plastic. In addition to the hotel rooms being luxurious and stylishly decorated, sustainability is also reflected in these rooms. For example, air conditioning isn’t necessary, as the building keeps the coolness well due to the natural sun protection. Nature and sustainability come together perfectly in this luxury hotel with its beautiful surroundings!

Hotel Jakarta, Amsterdam
This 'sustainable green oasis' in Amsterdam was opened in 2018 and is located in an energy-neutral building. Solar panels heat up the shower water, the subtropical courtyard is sprayed with collected rainwater and the hotel is heated and cooled as careful as possible. Even the staff’s clothing has been considered: these items mainly consist of residual materials. The insulation, installations and innovations make Hotel Jakarta one of the first energy-neutral hotels in the Netherlands. In addition to being good for the environment, the hotel is also incredibly photogenic. The tropical interior makes you feel like you are in Jakarta!
